Poppenspel is a collection of paintings that explore the boundary between living human and lifeless doll. Drawing inspiration from 19th-century figured landscapes, the series reflects a desire to study portraiture and the human figure while seeking the freedom to manipulate those forms, unbound by outside narratives or constraints.

Almost life-sized dolls serve as still-life subjects, allowing the paintings to blur the line between realism and artifice, evoking both vulnerability and quiet unease. Beneath this constructed world lies a sincere observation of nature: its forms, its stillness, and its subtle emotional charge.

Artist Statement

Dieter Ingels is a young Belgian painter who earned his master’s in fine arts (Painting) from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp in 2024. Deeply inspired by the techniques and sensibilities of the old masters, his work spans a wide range of subjects—including landscape, still life, interior scenes, and portraiture.

Romanticizing the quiet moments of daily life, Dieter always works from direct observation, even when painting landscapes. He uses nature not just as a subject, but as a surface on which to veil his own emotional landscapes. He strives towards creating slow paintings that invite quiet contemplation and evoke subtle yet intimate, introspective narratives.
